Salvia elegans is an evergreen herbaceous shrub with bright green, fragrant leaves and pretty tubular scarlet flowers which appear in summer and autumn.
As an herb it is very useful making a tasty addition to fresh fruit salads, summer drinks and pork dishes. It can also be dried for addition to cooked dishes.
It is probably best known however as an infusion which aids in digestion and alleviating heartburn (though sweetening with honey does help).
A great addition to an herb garden - but also makes an excellent potted plant on the patio where you'll brush past it to smell the wonderfully foliage fragrance of pineapples.
Just don't let it get too hot on summer afternoons when it will appreciate some mulch on the pot and a little shade from the late afternoon scorch.
