Brachychiton bidwillii, commonly known as the dwarf kurrajong, is a small tree found in eastern Australia.
It was originally classified in the family Sterculiaceae, which is now within Malvaceae.
Most forms of Brachychiton bidwillii drop their large, hand-shaped leaves before flowering.
As the plants age, flower production increases, and after 8 years or so they may produce bunches of up to 50 flowers coming directly from the trunk, as well as the usual flowers on twigs and branches.
Very ornamental, they have not been in general cultivation for long due to their rather variable nature, but new cultivars are coming onto the market that perform well in average gardens.
Suitable for larger pots planters and tubs.
