This is a perennial herb or sub-shrub native to the dry and sandy areas in Mediterranean countries from Greece to North Africa.
It is a small rounded bushy plant with lovely soft grey-green leaves. The stems and leaves are covered with tiny white hairs and glands that produce a wonderful aroma when touched.
The flowers are the classic two-lipped shape of all Salvia and vary in colour from pinks to purples and whites. They are produced on erect racemes along the upper portion of the flowering stems that rise 30cm above the leaves. When planted in a group they add colour to borders, pots and patios.
Salvia fruticosa 'Blue Skies' is a popular variety. It has silver-grey leaves and tall racemes of blue flowers in spring.
