Calathea zebrina (now re-named as Goeppertia zebrina) is a very striking perennial that bears ovate leaves on the end of stalks up to one meter long.
The leaves are bright green with deep purplish to green or brown stripes - hence its name.
New growth emerges from the centre of Calathea zebrina with the existing leaves spraying outwards.
The small flowers are fairly insignificant being hidden beneath the leaves.
Calathea zebrina are classic tropical under-storey plants, liking plenty of indirect light or dappled shade, lots of humidity and access to regular water for the roots.
They are most commonly seen in indoor planters, especially in larger rooms, offices or shopping centres where they make a bold and colourful impact all year round.
They do however need regular maintenance through watering and misting if the atmosphere is air conditioned and therefore dry.
