Guzmania plants are named after the 18th-century Spanish naturalist Anastasio Guzman, are one of the most beautiful types of bromeliads, with vibrant flowers and attractive strap-like foliage.
These are very popular in tropical/subtropical gardens or as house plants and have inspired many horticulturalists to create many splendid hybrids.
All Guzmania produce upright flower spikes consisting of bright coloured bracts most often red, with small, less obvious white or yellow flowers appearing over this period.
They need warm conditions, plenty of indirect light, humidity and regular access to water to thrive so can only be grown outdoors in such climates, however many are grown indoors providing that humidity is kept up.
