Austromyrtus dulcis has glossy, dark green, lanceolate leaves that are between 9-30 mm long and 3-10 mm wide which are arranged in opposite rows.
The underside of the leaves is hairy, giving it a pale appearance, as are the young, coppery coloured growing shoots which are also hairy.
The pretty white flowers are about 7-10 mm in diameter and are usually produced in clusters of 2-5 flowers in the upper axils, although single flowers are also seen.
Sweet tasting, edible berries are produced after the flowers which are mauve to white and covered in small spots.
It prefers full sun where it will grow as a dense spreading shrub, but in more shady areas it will take on a more ground cover format.
Austromyrtus dulcis makes an excellent shrub for sandy coastal situations, though it will need protecting from salty winds.
