Doryanthes palmeri is a striking perennial succulent native to Eastern Australia.
It has large, leathery, lanceolate shaped leaves that form a large rosette up to 3m wide and 1.5m tall.
In late spring a tall erect flowering stem grows from the centre of the leaf rosette. It can grow to 4m and tends to arch with the weight of the flowers.
The funnel shaped flowers are borne in panicles along the upper part of stem, they are a deep red to red brown colour with white throats and surrounded by red bracts.
Once established Doryanthes palmeri will tolerate mild drought, pollution and neglect which is why they are often used on commercial sites and as roadside plantings.
They are well suited as feature plants in larger native gardens and bushland settings.
The flowers attract insects and birds.
