Eryngium giganteum is an erect biennial or a rather short lived perennial plant that creates rosettes of heart-shaped foliage.
From these grow tall stems with spiny stem leaves atop which are produced umbels of blue conical flowers. The flower is surrounded by a collar of silvery/grey and spiny bracts that set it off perfectly.
These are best used as border plants to provide contrast to the softer foliage and flowers of traditional border plants. However they do provide strong interest themselves along with some lovely softer colours.
These rather architectural plants go well in cottage, courtyard, informal and wildflower gardens. they are also popular as cut flowers.
