Vriesea hieroglyphica is known as 'The King of the Bromeliads' which is largely due to its size.
It features striking, large, deep green leaves that have unusual, hieroglyph-like black banding and recurved tips. The leaves form a rosette of that can be as large as 1.5m in diameter.
They are used mainly as indoor plants, especially in commercial buildings where more space is available for planting en-masse. They also go well in shaded and humid locations outdoor in warmer climates.
Unlike other Bromeliads this plant can often bloom more than once, producing a tall spike atop which are yellow, cream or white flowers.
They will tolerate mild frost only.
