Pentas cultivars are available in many beautiful colours and sizes. They add splashes of colour to beds, borders and pots, the flowers are also good for flower arranging.
Pentas are grown for their showy flowers in shades of white, pinks, mauves and red. The small star-shaped flowers grow in tight clusters (umbels) above the foliage. The flowers are rich in nectar and good at attracting bees and butterflies.
For a long time Pentas were thought of as old-fashioned flowers but they are now becoming popular once again as we look for easy to grow plants, with a long flowering season and colourful flowers to populate are garden beds and borders.
Pentas is a subshrub, the lower stems tend to be woody while the upper stems supple. This is not a problem for the shorter varieties but for the tall varieties the stems can fall over and will need support.
The hybrid varieties can vary from 30cm to 1m. The shorter varieties tend to be more compact and mounded in shape, the taller hybrids tend to be much more open.
For maximum flower production plant in the full sun, they can be planted in part-shade but will produce less flowers.
