Phyllostachys edulis or Moso is one of the largest of all bamboos and is classified as a grass, though it appears to be more like a tree.
Towering up to 15m and sometimes more, the culms (stems) can grow to 20cms across while like all bamboo they are hollow inside separated by nodes. Each culm can live as long as 12 years.
The foliage is very attractive, paper-thin and around 8-10cms long and around 2cms wide.
The culms grow from underground shoots that emerge from a tangle of underground rhizomes that are 'running' in habit e.g. they'll grow like crazy and spread out of control quite easily.
This is a warmer climate bamboo though it will tolerate temperatures below zeroC.
You will of course need a huge garden to grow this plant, in fact a park or palace garden might be best, as often seen in Japan.
