Bauhinia variegata is a handsome and densely foliaged, evergreen tree that produces a profusion of fragrant white to pinky/white flowers in spring and early summer.
It has a short trunk and also features very unusual double lobed grey green foliage that will make a useful screen due to its density when fully grown.
The large flowers look quite like orchids making for a strong impact when in full bloom.
The flowers mature to long legume style pods which will hang on the tree for many months, looking a little untidy unless trimmed off.
It prefers warm climates, doesn't like cold winds or frosts.
Growing up to 9 metres in height, it goes well as a street tree and in medium to larger gardens where it makes a strong feature.
