Aechmea 'Burgundy' is a Bromeliad cultivar that forms a large, tubular rosette of arching leaves.
The concave shaped leaves are a copper to glowing burgundy colour when it receives good light though it will maintain its true burgundy color when kept indoors or in the shade.
This plant grows to about 70cm wide, but watch out as the leaves have upturned barbs running up to a sharp point in at the tip of the leaf, so take care.
The flowers are a milky white colour with purple petals.
This plant produces off-sets easily allowing for a nice grouping within a couple/few years.
If you wish to grow them on a tree, place sphagnum moss around the roots before either wedging the plant in the fork of a tree branch or securing it to trunk using a semi-circular clip around the base of the young plant (Pup).
Aechmea have evolved to be able to grow on trees and therefore gain more light in the forests.
The central leaf well creates a water reservoir and the plant takes up water through the modified leaf base, the roots offer support and only take up a little moisture. So when looking after your plant remember to keep water in the central leaf well.
