Opuntia rufida is a spineless prickly pear that has distinct trunks from which grow many branched pads which are grey green in colour and covered with circles of short brown spines called glochids.
It produces yellow to ochre red flowers around 7cms across which mature to bright red prickly pear fruits around 2.5cms long.
These are warm climate plants that will not stand temperatures under 10c.
This is a statuesque plant but must be planted away from passing human and pet traffic to avoid the glochids which can be a severe nuisance.
