Origanum majorana or Sweet Marjoram is a bushy herbaceous perennial or sub-shrub with grey green, ovate leaves that are sweetly aromatic.
This is the more delicately fragrant herb than Oregano and is most used in French and Italian cuisine especially in lightly cooked or raw dishes like fish and salads. This is because the gentle flavours can be reduced by high heat cooking and is therefore added at the end of cooking to retain maximum flavour.
In mid summer it produces clusters of rather small, almost inconspicuous, white to pale pink flowers.
This is a perfect plant for cottage style and Mediterranean gardens while going well in hanging baskets and pots and planters in just about any garden - especially townhouse courtyards.
