Camellia sasanqua is an evergreen domed tree that is usually pruned as a shrub.
When pruned as shrub it has a dense habit that and the small glossy dark green leaves make it a popular hedging plant.
During late summer to early winter it bears masses of really pretty, slightly fragrant, single or semi-double flowers in pinks, whites, reds and bicoloured. The flowers are more delicate than those of Camellia japonica though somewhat shorter lived.
They prefer semi-shade but will grow happily with early morning sun and afternoon shade.
They tolerate moderate winds, though if planting in an area with strong winds they will need some protection.
Although frost hardy a late frost can damage the flowers.
These lovely trees add autumn colour to the garden, they can be grown as feature trees, pruned as shrubs and used as hedging or they can be espaliered against a wall or fence.
Generally they like mild and humid conditions.
