Vermiculite is a very lightweight product (hydrated laminar magnesium aluminum ironsilicate ) that improves the aeration and water holding capacity of growing media like potting mixes, hydroponics and seed raising mixes.
Vermiculite has many uses for gardeners:-
* Soil-less growing media: when combined with peat, sphagnum moss or composted pine bark, the mix promotes fast root growth, has a high ion exchange and excellent moisture stabilising capacity.
* Seed germination: vermiculite is ideal for the germination of seeds, due to its water holding capacity and aeration properties. Combine with compost, or use alone. If used alone, seedlings should be fed with a weak fertilizer solution when the first true leaves appear.
* Storing bulbs: allow bulbs to dry in the sun before storing, then place in cartons and cover with vermiculite. As vermiculite has a high highly absorption capacity it will assist in preventing mould and mildew. It will not absorb moisture from within the bulb, but just regulate the external moisture level.
