Webmaster - Sydney: Hey Mary. The grass needs to be higher than the surround to use the vertical 'Border Shears" or there needs to be a gutter for the blades to be able to access the grass edge. In other words - vertical blades for vertical grass edge. The horizontal blade shears are regular grass shears but with longer handles so are best suited for horizontal grass surfaces..
