Phaseolus coccineus - Runner Beans.
Scarlet Emperor is a 2m tall vine that produces very straight long pods with 6 large seeds. They are the sweetest variety of runner bean and consistently produce vines well over 2m.
The flowers are a very attractive scarlet colour. This is a perennial variety of bean.
Eat them pods and all when picked young or save the seeds alone for winter stews.
Direct sow seeds 15-20cm apart in rows that are 45cm apart or preferably against a wall. Gently push the seed into the soil, cover lightly and water. Poor germination generally reflects over watering and rotting of seed.
Beans are a nitrogen fixing crop.
Sow in Spring to Summer in a well drained, full sun position.
Make sure soil is not too acidic.
