Phaseolus coccineus - Runner Bean.
Scarlet Runner is a 2.5m tall vine that produces very straight long pods with 5-7 large seeds. This variety of runner bean is the most commonly grown of all the runner bean varieties.
The flowers are an attractive scarlet colour.
This is a perennial variety of bean.
Eat them, pods and all, when picked young or save the seeds alone for winter stews.
Direct sow seeds 15-20cm apart in rows that are 45cm apart or preferably against a wall. Gently push the seed into the soil, cover lightly and water.
Poor germination generally reflects over watering and rotting of seed.
Beans are a nitrogen fixing crop.
Sow in Spring to Summer in a well drained, full sun position.
Make sure soil is not too acidic.
