Brassica rapa var chinensis - Bok Choy.
This short, green stemmed variety is prized for its rich flavour and compact narrow stems. It is very fast to make size and is commonly picked for baby choy and used in stirfrys and often best when steamed.
Its ideal small size is just enough for a small meal or single dish with no waste.
In cool areas it can be grown all year round but does best when sown in late summer for winter harvest and in autumn for spring harvest. In all other areas it can be sown all year round. It will mature in 50-55 days.
These Cabbages are fast maturing when very young and are best planted outdoors directly into the garden.
Plant seed 0.5-1cm deep and50-60cm apart in rows 1m apart or when grown for picking as salad greens they can be planted very much closer.
Bok Choy likes alkaline soils, rich nutrient loads, well limed, manured and watered.
