Fennel Sweet Florence Bulbing:
All parts of this widely adapted, fast growing plant are aromatic with an anise-like scent and flavor.
It has a lovely feathery textured appearance, is very tough and adaptable, although it does better in cool to warm climates.
The plant grows to 70-120cm and leaves can be harvested in 50-60 days. The fine feathery foliage is used in salads, cole-slaw and dressings.
The succulent bulbous stalk base is cooked as a vegetable.
The seeds, are an aid for digestion (and often seen in Indian restaurants coated in sugar).
The finely chopped leaves can be added to many dishes: notably fish and pasta, potatoes and also to gourmet vinegars.
It will grow best in full sun and in a position that is well sheltered from the wind and is very easily grown from seed.
Direct sow the seeds 5mm deep and about 35 cm apart. Keep well watered during spring and summer to ensure sweet succulent growth in the bulb.
Sow seeds in Spring and Autumn.
