Trees - native > Pruning
I have a hedge of Callitris rhomboidea which I need to trim about 15 years old. It has never been trimmed before and I am not sure how hard I can cut it back. Will it resprout from old wood?
Hey Jane, The Oyster Bay Pine is a great garden specimen and takes to pruning generally very well. However as with all native shrubs and trees I would take care when pruning hard as they will often just go woody in the centre and in many cases not respond too well with new growth. Thats not to say that it can't be done. I suggest you take it back in stages, always leaving enough green growth to look good. If new growth appears further in towards the centre of the tree then once that has become established you can try trimming it back further. Little by little - that's the safest way to go.
