Just looking for a some advice on what trees or shrubs to plant as a hedge. The area has clay soil so retains the water and is in full sun. Based in Victoria will act as a screen from neighbours
Hi Paul I would try to improve the soil before planting your hedge. Dig in organic matter to 30cm to help to break up the soil and improve the air and drainage. Once the plants have been planted it is much harder to improve the soil. Make sure you use a good layer of mulch on the top the soil around the plants, this will keep keep the weeds away, prevent evapouration and be taken into the soil by all the creatures living in the soil further improving the soil. Just a few to think about. There are few plants that thrive in poorly drained soil. Most of the following list grow in clay type soils but prefer it to be free draining. Acacia vestita grows fast to 4m. Aug to October Yellow flowers Buxus balaerica grows fast to 3.5m ?? Euonymus japonica Aureomarginata medium growth to 3m Grevillea longifolia - fast to 3.5m - open hedge Pyracantha angustifolia - fast to 3m Viburnum tinus fast to 3m Callistemon citrinus - fast to 6m Melaleuca nesophylla Western Honey Myrtle to 6m but will prune to hedge Melaleuca thrymifolia "Thyme Honey Myrtle' to 4m will prune to hedge
