I have set up a vegetable garden with six raised beds. I am now at the stage of the end of my first season, and would like some comments on rotational planting, with ideas on what to follow on from what. Know some, but not all.
If you have had any diseased plants e.g. tomatoes, silverbeet etc, especially fungal - then ensure you plant very different veggies in that bed next time after you have carefully gathered up and burned all leaf residue and or mulch that could hold diseased tissue or fungal spores. Best to try root crops after.
Crops that are very green leaf orientated like beans, tomatoes, brassicas, capsicums are always best followed by root crops like radishes, beet, potatoes, turnips, carrots etc. Leafy crops are very heavy nitrogen feeders so its good to let the soil naturally re-balance over the following year.
But the best tip of all is to dig in lots of compost and composted animal manure - ensuring that you have not put weeds into your compost heap as this will only help promote more weeds as the seeds survive composting very well.
