My dwarf lavatera were decimated last summer by leaf and flower eating insects - yet other annuals around were not touched.
I hate using chemicals under these circumstances and wondered if there is any organic way to solve the problem - like companion planting.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Lavatera are prone to pests like aphids and spider mites and diseases like Hollyhock Rust but this doesn't sound like aphids or spider mites.
It sounds more like skeletonisation which is caused by larvae which feed on the chlorophyl in the green leaves, while they will leave the veins - hence the lace-like or snowflake-like patterns left.
The best treatment is Neem Oil or PestOil which are both eco-friendly, though insecticidal soaps also work well.
Another very eco alternative is to plant Basil close by - many insects can't stand the smell and keep away.
