Hi,
can someone advise me what may be the cause of this problem with my young tomato plants, I have the same yellowing in the leaves in my Kent pumpkins too.
When I formed the bed I threw a small amount of Rooster poo into the soil and hoe'd this with my Honda tiller, the PH was neutral from the test I did, the fertiliser is about 2 years old, maybe a bit mre than 2 years.
thanks for any info.
Fred
There are many causes of the leaves turning yellow but main ones are:
# Too much or too little water. It is easy to check the moisture level of soil by pushing your finger into the soil to the first joint, you will be able to tell whether you need to water.
# Too much or too little fertiliser, excess can be more damaging than insufficient. As you haven't fertilised the soil for two years it is likely the plant is telling you have it needs feeding. For vegetables there are two options:
i) Fortnightly application of a soluble fertiliser ie Thrive or Powerfeed
ii) At the beginning of season application of sustained release fertiliser
There are different formulations, for green leafed vegetables, for flowering and fruiting vegetables and a general broad spectrum for both.
# Sunlight can also be another factor, all vegetables require a minimum of half a day of sunlight, too little light and the leaves can start to yellow
# pests and diseases. Tomatoes are susceptible to many pests and diseases. Look on the leaves for signs of insects. Powdery deposits are most likely fungal, small insects on the underside of leaves could be sucking the sap from the leaves.
