When should i prune my roses?
Prune roses at the end of autumn as they start to hibernate for winter - in the southern hemisphere that's July. There's an old saying that pruning in June is too soon. For those in the northern hemisphere just add six months on e.g. December.
Roses literally go to sleep in the winter, so by pruning in the coldest months they will not create new growth, but just stay compact over winter for lots of lovely new growth to appear in spring.
You can even dig them up and prune the roots a little too during winter - though don't let the roots dry out too much.
This is why you can see bare rooted roses (with the roots in a plastic bag) for sale in shops over winter.
