Hi there, I've found a silky oak seedling in my garden bed and have transferred it to a pot to nurture before moving it to a permanent home in a private arboretum. Any advice for keeping it alive and well? It's taken a few blows from hedgers and its removal was not ideal.
Apologies for taking so long to reply.
One of the key things is to make sure pot you have planted the seedling is not too large. A seedling has a very small root system and not a great deal of growth above the soil so will not need huge amounts of water. Seedlings planted into a large pot can suffer root rot because the water sits in potting mix and doesn't drain away. When the plant's roots can be seen coming out of the base of the pot you can either plant it directly in the soil or more to a slightly larger pot.
